The Lord Stanley, Camden

Brilliant. Nice draught beer to start with and an excellent gastropub dinner to follow. Bruschetta with goats cheese, jerusalem artichokes and walnut dressing. Lamb hotpot pasta. Ben had beetroot and mixed leaves salad followed by Roast pigeon, peas, turnips, spuds and interesting sauce. A very down to earth place with sensible pricing in whole pounds - none of the effete £4-99 rubbish - just £5. Whole meal for 2 was £42 including some beer. I'm beginning to like London pubs a lot. Most of them do very good food (if you avoid Kings Cross) and most have good beers on tap. There's a lot to go at...

La Dolce Vita, Birstall

Birthday bash for 10 people. They gave us an area all to ourselves which was quite nice. An old building with uneven stairs and walls etc. Quite quaint.

The trouble with 10 people is getting them all together and splitting the bill. We finally made our 8pm reservation at about 2025. Menus were extensive and I chose Salad Mediterraneo which promised olives, anchovies, artichokes and tuna. What I received was olives, artichokes and tuna plus cucumber, red pepper, green pepper, onion, yellow pepper and no dressing or oil anywhere to be seen. This was remedied by Gordon who managed to find the restaurants oil & vinegar dispenser. No anchovies and one of the reasons I chose that salad was anchovies. Other starters were well received.

My main course was pepperoni pizza with chillis and it was exactly what it said on the menu. A few glasses of red wine and most people had a good meal. A T bone steak looked good. Lamb shanks and chops were good. An immense Calzone plus many assorted dishes.

One steak was sent back as it was overcooked and although they did another one it was a bit slow. Service in general was a bit slow as evidenced by the 20 minute wait between mains being cleared away and desserts being suggested. There were some who would have had puds & coffee but the long wait killed their desire.

Just over £23 each for plenty of food and drinks. I suspect they overfilled the restaurant a touch which meant service suffered. A quiet dinner for 2 midweek might be a better option.
